Does anyone know of an exception guide or tour company for a multi day trip to the ruins. My daughter asks, and although she is sure she will be able to find a tour group once she gets to Cusco, we were wondering if anyone here has a gem of a referral.

Oh, and how I wish I was going along!

    Hi,

Well I guess I'll book it a bit earlier than the time I plan to arrive there which will be in the high season.

    Thanks for the information given.

Hi I've actually read now that you can do this hike to Macchu Picchu by yourself and not with a guide. I read it is US$50 or US$25 with Student / Youth card. Apparantly there are camping spots along the way so I may not need to book earl

    Hello everybody:
Unfortunately, nowadays it's not as easy as show up in Cusco and shop around for a tour to the Inca trail, specially on the high season (June to Sept.), since year 2001, new regulations have taken place and it's harder and harder to book it. This year new rules took place, first of all, the limit today is 500 people per day, including guides and porters. Also, the tour outfitters have to confirm and pre-pay for the spots 45 days in advance.

It's likely that you will be able to find last minute spots, but it will be expensive, and you will have to spend more time than what you planned just waiting to start the inca trail.

I highly recommend to book it in advance.

    A big Peruvian hug

hiya, i´ve just completed the inca trail last week. 4 days 3 nights. it was fantastic, but you cant do it without a guide now. new legislation. plus all guides have to be registered. the number of tourists walking the trail per day is limited because machu picchu is apparently slowly sinking. also, you cant start the trail until 4 days after you book it, so arrive in cusco earlier than you plan to start the trail. the peruvian government is looking at extending this to 30 days!! sounds ridiculous to me. Puma tours in cusco is a good firm, provided excellent cook and camping equipment, located near the cathedral in Plaza de Armas. by the way, we left 2 days before 2 large mudslides killed 6 locals, so the trail is temporarily closed while the government assesses its safety. should be open towards end of april. hope that help

    Hi,

Well when i was there in 2002, we did our Machu Pichu hike with a company called United Mice, who are based in Cusco, and are FANTASTIC! They are in the Peru Lonely Planet guides, with an email address. Maybe get in touch with them, and try and book before you go.
You definitely need a guide to do the 3 day trip.
You will have a great time - wish i was back there! Make sure you spend a few days in Cusco acclimitising, and enjoying the place - Cusco is magical.

    Have a great trip!

    Hi,
I was there last October. I did my own inca trail, I walked from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes along the railway :) And from Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu in the night... That saved me a lot of money :), and I was the first one in the ruines, even before the inca trail people
