   Hi,
   Can anyone help me with recommending a good hostel in Sydney. Looking for central location, prefer quieter hostel, smallish, friendly over xmas and new year.

   Any help would be gratefully received.

   I am currently in the Sydney Central YHA and it is large . . .great place but not probably where you want to spend your first few days. I really recommend you go somewhere small . . the public transport is great, so consider going into one of the Suburbs . .I am enjoying being able to walk to most places from where I am (admittedly get bus or train back in evening) but I have decided for all future hostels I am going to look at places which have 50/60 beds max . . . . . .hope this helps, becky

   Just to add....... the 'Wakeup' in Sydney is fantastic, had a great time there, very clean and friendly, its also very central, which is good, it's a bit more expensive than some but you get what you pay for !
   It's quite new so isn't in the latest edition of Lonely Planet, but it's well worth a stay.
   The YHA (11 Rawson Place) is ok, clean etc but very sterile atmosphere, so not so good for meeting people and making friends.
   The best hostel I stayed at in the most gorgeous place in Oz was Geoffs Place - linked through YHA but not in the books, it used to be a real party place, bit scummy but it's been taken over and done up, the wooden chalets are gorgeous and it's a stones throw from Horseshoe Bay on Magnetic Island (my very own uncommercialised paradise!)
   To get there, get the Greyhound from Cairns to Townsville and then the ferry across to Magnetic Island, it's well worth it.

   Hmm, good question. The problem with wanting a central location is that most hostels there are huge or small and not quiet. The most central (Central Station) are Wake Up and the YHA which both house 500+ beds and cost 30+ AUD for a 8 person dorm as far as I know. At that time of year I think 30 AUD would be a very good price and you should probably consider booking well in advance for that period if a smaller hostel is preferred.

   Depending on how long you are planning to stay in Sydney over this time of year, you might also consider some of the medium term stay shared apartments for backpackers. There are a few organizations that do this these day and they basically work like a hostel but charge per week so are generally cheaper and you know your roommates better (as they are all there for a few weeks minimum).

   Can't for the life of me think of the name of the most popular one anymore... I'll think about it some more and let you know...

   Hi, ok its not exactly a small hostel but its very friendly and has a great atmosphere. I stayed for a couple of weeks at the original backpackers lodge in Victoria St Potts Point (the posh side to kings x).
   Its got plenty of space, different sized dorms, bathrooms and large outdoor areas. The dorms are modern and clean + the most comfortable beds i have experienced in a hostel so far. It will be extremely hot when you are in Sydney - so the courtyard areas will be much needed. The main difference btwn this and other large hostels in the city is that they are huge building blocks - which seem to lack atmosphere and identity. The backpakers lodge has several buildings all based around the courtyard are - and its so much easier to get chatting to people. Its still in the central business district, but not as heavily congested and polluted as staying near central station. The bars nearby are also good
