Hey! Two of us are planning a trip to Oz/NZ leaving in Aug.04 and returning in Feb 05. We are wondering if there is any other travel options between the two countries (besides flights). If not, any suggestions on cheap airlines would help.

Ps Has anyone worked with the WWOOF (Willing Workers on Organic Farms) program? Any suggestions of farms to visit? And did you find it saved you money?

    Thanks!

Just further to Kelster's suggestion above, "Pacific Blue" run budget priced direct flights between the Australian East Coast capital cities of Sydney, Melbourne & Brisbane and Christchurch in NZ, they also do a direct flight between Sydney and Wellington in NZ.

They can be found on the "Virgin Blue" website, (which of course do domestic flights within Australia), that URL is: www.virginblue.com.au.

As for "WWOOF"ing, well, I'm sure they're a very worthy pursuit, and this link may help you: www.wwoof.com.au BUT as an alternative, you may wish to consider "Conservation Volunteers Australia" (website: www.cva.org.au), an organisation I personally (if that's not an oxymoron!) have had something to do with, as a volunteer.

In fact I'm about to take off this coming weekend (Sat 29 May 04) for a three week CVA adventure into far western NSW, after doing a one week "test the water" experience at Easter time in the Nattai National Park south of Sydney.

If it's anything like my first experience multiplied by 3 weeks, then I'll be happy !

try freedom air (subsidiary of air new zealand) also. a bit more competition now so i think prices are coming down. no boats unfortunately due to the distance but if you know someone from a freight company they might be able to get you on - takes about 3 days though i think

Have you tried Virgin Blue? Not sure if they fly between NZ & Oz but they are cheap.
We have hired a tent whilst in NZ, not Oz cos I'm too scared of spiders!! But it is quite cheap, although we're not out there yet & will prob spend loads more than anticipated...

There are lots of airlines between Oz and Nz and some are really cheap. ($400NZ return) thats about 130 pounds I think- but you can get good deals.
There are sometimes cruises to Auck from Sydney but they tend to be quite expensive.

Try Freedom Air airlines- cheap as.
As for WWOOFing lots of people do it here. Its a good chance to meet the real NZ as oppossed to the touristy version. Not too sure if you save lots as in most places you can get bacpacker/hostel accomodation for about $NZ20. but its worth the experience.
