I had friends that stayed at ACB, it's pretty rough, but it is right downtown. We stayed at Central City Backpackers, also downtown, similar quality (pretty rough, but who cares) It had a bar below (The Embargo, if I remember, which had it's own brewed beer on tap) IF you want a little different option, our second time through Auckland, we stayed at the Brown Kiwi...a much "nicer" place, it's a home-run hostel, large 2-story house, nice garden, etc. Alittle further out of town (15 minute walk to downtown center) , but only one block from a bus route that goes directly into downtown.

    Hi,

I stayed in Auckland Central Backpackers (ACB). Its a great location and has all the facilities you could need, travel centre, kitchen, internet, laundry, bar, film room, etc... I think it was about $24NZ for a dorm room. Its not the quietest of places though as its a pretty big place.

    Hope this helps

    Hey!

I'm off to Auckland in a few months and I was recommended the Base Backpackers which is close to Auckland's main street (apparently- haven't been there yet!) and has the airbus go there straight from the airport.
It's advertised as the cleanest and newest in town and is $20NZ per night. There are also rooms just for girls with complimentary shampoo and fluffy whit towels or something. But that will up the price by a couple of bucks!

I stayed in ACB as well and it was probably one of the best hostels I stayed in throughout New Zealand. The Globe Bar was excellent - I did meet some people who didn't think much of it, but I was probably swayed by all the free booze. You got free beer vouchers when you arrived, one night they had a drinking game with free punch and one night they also had a free thousand dollar bar tab. They also organised activities every day such as football and trips to the beach. It's also very central.
