Australia - Rental car   (8 posts)

    Hi there,

I like to travel for quite a while through New Zealand and Australia. Does anyone know where are the best places to get a unexpensive car ? I would prefer to book via the Internet. And what kind of car is best to travel these countries ? I would prefer to sleep in a tent and just use the car for travelling.

    Thanks and regards

What do you mean by quite a while? If it is going to be a long time (ie. 6 months or so), you will probably want to consider buying a car. There are cars in any price range pretty much, although the cheaper ones will also be less reliable - which can really hurt if you break down in the middle of the desert! Definitely consider geting RAC coverage if you buy a car; they'll help you out if you break down somewhere. If you're not here for longer than a few months, hiring a car may be the way to go - sorry to say I've never hired a car here though (apart from a moving truck once :))

Where are you planning on driving around in Australia? I'm no car expert, but if you just plan to go down the east coast and pretty much stick to major cities, pretty much any sedan or small car would do (might want to make sure it has air conditioning if it's in summer though). If you plan to do some off-roading or head out bush, you may need a 4wd. I can't really speak for NZ. Let us know some more details, so we can help out more

Cairns is a very cheap place to look for a car, Most of the time travellers will travel up the east coast, and fly home or on from there. We noticed that there was around 10-15 cars/vans parked at the airport with the keys and relevant docs in there all you need to do is pick-up the parking fee.

Not saying that's what you should do but always an option.
Also if you are buying of a traveller never pay what they are asking, more than likley they will be leaving Oz soon and take what ever they can get,

    Hi,

thanks for your reply. I wish I could stay for 6 month, but I will stay only 6 weeks in Australia and 4-6 weeks in New Zealand.

I already found some rental car companys but there the car costs $80/day which is very expensive.

Thats why I am looking for a cheaper rental car company and thought maybe someone has some good advice.

This might be off topic a bit but could help some people who are thinking of buying a car to travel around Australia. My son, who is backpacking at the moment bought a Ford Falcon from 2 policemen. He thought it would be reliable to get him from Sydney to Melbourne. He just called me this morning from a service station to say that the car is a complete disaster and a garage told him it is very unsafe to drive. He is unsure if it would be breaking the law to abandon it as the car is in his name. He is 250 miles from Sydney and hoping some lorry drivers will give him and his friends a ride back to town.
