Australia, which city would you choose?   (7 posts)

    Hello everyone!

I'm leaving for Australia in April, to do a 5-6 month's internship there. I now need to choose which city to go to, and I have no clue!

I was thinking to go to Brisbane, because apparantly it's always nice weather there (since I'll be there from April to October), it's a city but it's not too big, and I can travel up the coast from there.

Where would you go? I've never been to Australia, and I don't know any Australians (I just heard they're all really nice ;). My 'lonely planet/web site's' knowledge tells me to go to Brisbane. I'll stay in a family the first 2 weeks then rent an apartment. Is it easy to meet people who are lost and don't know anyone like me?

I'll probably work for 5 months then travel around the last month. What are nice week-end trips I can do from Brisbane?

Thanks for any suggestions you may have!

    Merci!

If sophistication, class, culture and experiencing REAL Australia is more you bag, then
Melbourne is the town for you.

In a nutshell, it all comes down to one thing: Football.

Yes Melbourne is the epicentre of the world's greatest sport, Australian Rules
    Football.

Add to that the fact that you have the finest food and wine culture south of the
Equator and some of the most diverse scenery in the country then Melbourne really is
    un-paralleled.

Hi. The best city I have ever visited in Australia, and maybe the world, is Perth. The people are the friendliest and the city is the most chilled out (possibly because it is the remotest city in the world). There is some guides and a few tips and advice on travelslang (a new dot com site). I found Sydney fun but rather unfriendly.

at any other time of the year, i would say stay out of brisbane. its boring compared to sydney and melbourne. but during winter the weather is much better in brisbane. when it comes to the cost of accommodation, i've never payed over 100 bucks a week in sydney. just spend some time looking the place. for weekend trips brisbane is really good base. it takes only an hour or so to gold coast or sunshine coast. if you'll find somebody to share aan apartment you can find amazing flats down in the valley, brisbane, (spa, sauna, gym, swimming pool) and its not so expensive.

Brissy would be cool - as you are close to the Gold Coast :) & you could travel to the Northern parts of Qld and see things like the Great Barrier reef etc etc.
But Sydney and Melbourne offer much more varitey

Hey there, im an australian, lived here all my life and would have to saybrisbane or sydney. Melbourne is a hole, i have been to all capitals of australia on many occasions, and deffinantly syd or brissy.

I say brisbane because of the gold coast. i dont actually like brisbane city much but it is close to the gold coast and all its attractions so if you like partying and sunny beaches, its place to be...

Although sydney is nice, it is mainly good for just visiting for a week or so, experience the city and view all the attractions, then i would head south of sydney about an hour to NSW south coast. Has spectacular beaches, townships etc.....

Last thing....you have to spend some time on the great barrier reef...SPECTACULAR! good luck, have fun!!

As a Brisbanite for the last 5 years I would recommend it. As you say, the weather is a big factor there although at this time of year the humidity can get a little overwhelming. ;)
It's only about a hour and a half train trip down the the gold coast, where the beaches are amazing and there's plenty to do, and a bit longer up to the good beaches in the sunshine coast as well which is a bit quieter but just as nice.
You can also get up to the glasshouse mountains (near the sunshine coast) for some great hikes, and down to places like mt tambourine and byron bay without too much travelling. and there are also some great islands just off the coast, like stradbroke, moreton and fraser, that have some really worthwhile places to visit and hike in.
and depending what sort of accommodation you're after you could do it much cheaper than $100 a week. take a look around one of the uni's (uq or qut) to do the sharehouse thing for heaps cheaper. of course it depends on how close to the city you are. its a good idea to try and get a place somewhere on the train line, cos then you can get around really easily and get to most of the interesting places even if u aren't living right in the centre of it.
