Going solo   (9 posts)

Im off to australia in august, flights booked and working visa obtained!! Im going on my own and leaving my loooooooooooooong term boyfriend behind!! Much to his disapproval, but I think it has to be done, at least before i turn 26! Needless to say, as a female, I have some concerns.
Therefore ANY words of wisdom and comfort would be greatly appreciated. I havent really got any set plans, as I think il wait till i get there before I decide what to do and where to go next. I am flying into Sydney at the beginning of August....Anyone who may be travelling to Australia around about that time and would like some company, then please let me know! Also, I would like to rent out an apartment or flat or whatever in Sydney...anyone know how to go about that or where the good but relatively inexpensive accomadation is?? Many thanks, and look forward to hearing from you..

You have made a wise decision....even though your boyfriend might not like it!

Most people who travel to Australia do it solo so you are definitely not on your own! You will meet people on the first day, probably already at the airport in Northern Ireland who are on exactly the same trip as you! And if you are open to new people, within a week you will be partying like a rockstar with a bunch of new friends....guaranteed!

Now, cheap accommodation is always the biggest worry when getting to Oz but most people find a solution in the first couple of weeks. August is not the busiest time in Sydney because it is their winter (although still very moderate) so you will still find it reasonably easy to get a place I would think. I would recommend Coogee, Bondi, Bronte, Manly as beaches with a good vibe, even though they are run over by backpackers and students (this isn't necessarily a bad thing.... I loved living in Cooge for 9 months!). Finding a cheap place can be tough here though and get ready to share a room with at least one other person if you don't want to pay more than 110 AUD a week in Sydney (pretty much everywhere). There is a well known street called Hall Street in Bondi where there is a window plastered with accommodation offerings...I think it is 5 Hall Street. In Coogee there was a place next to the Mac Donalds which was run by a really nice guy and he rented out some of his houses and appartments to backpackers. Other nice places in Sydney to live are Glebe (heaps of students here) and Darlinghurst for example. These are more city central areas though and 95% of the backpackers prefer the beaches. Check out the Sydney Morning herald on Saturday for most accommodation listings. Wednesday is the other day I think they have accommodation listed. Besides that, hostels are a good place to find accommodation as most have notice boards that are readily used by other travellers. And don't forget the good old phone book where under real estate agents you will be able to find a grand selection of agents all over the city. The only problem with these is that they often require you to sign a lease for at least 6 months (usually a year) and most backpackers tend not to stick around for that length of time.....

Regarding work you should probably be ok as well at that time of year. I would stay away from places that charge you money and say they will get you work in x amount of days. They usually do offer you something but it could only be for 8 hours and then they have lived up to their end of the deal in their eyes while you are at least 200 bucks lighter. And these so called 'backpacker agencies' usually get the work from other employment agencies anyway. All other employment agencies don't charge anything and will have jobs going here and there for backpackers. Just make sure all of them (or a lot of them) have your resume so you get the calls when they get the work. Most people just tend to find something more permanent on their own though...bars, cafes, restaurants, hostels etc. are your best bet here. Oh, and call center work is always available!

    Hope that helps....

    Cheers,

    Hi,
It sounds like you're in much the same boat that I am.... I'm leaving for Aus for 6-12 months in July, and leaving my long-term gf behind who just can't leave the country(for work not anything illegal...... she's not thrilled about it, but knows I've been talking about doing this for a couple of years now. Anyways, I'm 28, Canadian, and have no plans whatsoever other than learning to surf..... If you're interested in chatting more drop me a line.....

    hi everyone
I just wanted to ask if anyone is concerned about this SARS virus....I heard on tv that it had spread to australia and the government there is contemplating closing its borders to anyone coming from an infected country:(
Im sure this is slightly exaggerated but I would hate to think that i couldnt go to Oz because of this mutant cold!!!!!!!!
Im probably being paranoid about the whole thing!!! Right???

    Hi,

Glad to see someone else is taking the plunge, I'm still trying to get the courage to do the same. I have my working visa now and have even been before for 2 months so I know how easy it is to meet people. Unfortunatly that was with someone else, and am very nervous of going solo. Where are you planning on going to first? Any stopovers? If I can get some courage together and get out there in the next few weeks maybe we could meet up?
If you don't mind me asking, how much $ are you taking with you, and do you plan on working??
Please email me if you get the chance. If not have a great time!!;)

I am going solo to Oz as well and have never even been before, at least you have a bit of an insight having been for 2 months. Be brave and take the plunge, I don't think you'll regret it if your hearts really in it.
I am so worried and then excited all at the same time, my range of emotions about it change daily. But all I know is I want to go and see whats out there.
I'm sure it's as wonderful as everyones always saying but I am nervous about whether i will make friends. As I am a bit older than the average traveller(28yrs old)
Hope to be gone by end of January, was supposed to be going at the end of December but my house sale fell through so my plans were delayed but I'm not deterred. Where are you flying into?
Do you have set plans for somewhere to stay or are you just going to wing it when you get there?
Anyway good luck I'm sure you'll have a great time.

well can i just say to those people who are nervous about going to australia on their own that they have nothing to worry about! I left home in beginning of august, and met up with a guy who i got to know thru this forum and had a ball!!!!! It really was a brilliant time. Due to unforseen circumstances i had to come back earlier than expected, and i miss it every day! Everyone in australia is so friendly and helpful, and there are soooo many other travellers! No probs meeting people, and no worries if you are a female solo traveller.
Kris if your reading this, then thanks for a brilliant time! Hope the depression hasnt hit you too hard!!!;)
    (good weekend??)

Sounds like this guy you met was a really nice bloke and you were damn lucky to meet him..........oh you mean me

I have to agree with this crazy, but amazing irish girl that the land down under is a very friendly and welcoming place. I met people within hours of arriving and spent very little time travelling on my own (allthough be weary of any irish women in Noosa Heads building giant sand turtles on the beach )
Every place you will visit will have like minded travellers to talk to and as i found out the hard way, to drink with!!
One word of advice though, dont plan too much as everything changes the moment you arrive. Just go with the flow and enjoy every moment.

I'll E-mail you soon hun as i've got a lump in my throat from reading your message

P.s The weekend was great but the reality has hit me like a pig on roller blades!
