My wife and i spent over a year in Melbourne and I'm glad to see your including it. Many people just stick to the east coast, but Mel-bun is a fabulous city.

places to stay: there's the nunnery in Fitzroy. It's quite central and even though it's a hostel it has reasonably priced double rooms. book ahead though. there's a number of excellent pubs and restaurants in fitzroy and i recommend it as an area to stay in. very close to downtown too.

I agree with the 12 apostles - quite breathtaking, but there's no shrtage of that in the whole country. Other stops might include the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Be sure to catch a footy match if there's any on. Third best sport in the world after hockey and that thing the afghans play on horseback with the goat carcass.

Make sure you stop in Nimbin while you're up towards Byron Bay. Granny's is a good place to camp or stay, though i found it much easier getting to Nimbin then it was leaving :)

In Sydney I highly recommend checking out the Priscilla Drag Show at the Imperial. It's free and a whole lot of fun. Just stick close to your wife ;)

That's it for me. Best of luck and congratulations!

Hi Kkworks and congrats from Norway as well! I just got engaged and am still trying to plan everything as well....

Pete is right, I would either do gc, syd, mel or reverse that. As far as how to get from place to place, what about something like a campervan? This obviously depends on what you see to be a great honeymoon, but if you are talking about two weeks, driving would be a great way to see these three areas. Even though distances are substantial, two weeks gives you enough time to drive it and a campervan allows the added benefit of sleeping anywhere you like. Of course it might not be your ideal method of travelling on your honeymoon, but I think driving would be a good option either way.

I would definitely recommend Fraser Island if you can get up that far north on the east coast in the time frame you are looking at. Another very cool little place is Byron Bay, home to surfers, hippies and backpackers, they don't allow anything to be built higher than the tallest tree and there are no traffic lights. Quite different to say Surfers Paradise which is basically a huge tourist city, although it is also fun to spend time here because luxury is everywhere...

it depends what sort of people you are and what you like to do to decide where to
    start
ive travelled around australia all my life and i will catagorise the cities like this
first of all i would start in adelaide where i live
i wouldnt stay here more than a night but i would hire a car and drive to melbourne
    via the great ocean road
Stay at a resort called the nepean country club(its awesome)
melbourne is a cultural city and i dont really find much to do there either unless you
like looking at museums and buildings
sydney is the worst city in australia as far as im concerned and i moved from there
as soon as i had kids
its too busy, dirty and hectic for me
gold coast is busy as hell as well with about 500,000 people on the strip at any one
time even though there are only 70000 residents but the weather is good and its
    always great party atmosphere
if you want to just relax go further north to airlie beach or whitsundays and lie on the
    beach all day and night
temperature never goes below about 22c at night and ive found thats the best place
    to end a holiday
heaps of resorts there if you want to party as well
if yopu want some prices on accomodation let me know and i can get some great
    deals for you

    Hi,

I'm not a huge expert on Australia, spent about 2 weeks there a couple of years ago.

We started in Sydney, spent quite a long time there, rented a car drove to Blue Mountains, Hunter Valley and a few detours and then on to the coast - unfortunately we never made it to Nimbin, but was very close on our way to Byron Bay. From there along the coast to Brisbane. The trip from Sydney took us 5 days, gave us a lot of time to see lots of this small area of Australia, so I'd be in favour of renting a car as well, in 2 weeks you can cover quite a bit. But if you're not interested in the area from Brisbane and to Sydney why not fly, Virginblue should be quite cheap as far as I know.

As for hotels, check the links page, we booked hotels through Wotif, very good value.

    Have a great honeymoon.
