    Hi,

I will be travelling to Turkey sometime mid year 2003, or thereabouts, and would like to know what I'd have to know about Turkiye. I have no clues about this country, nor what they language they speak. And how the Lira or whatever monetary system they use. I'm so ignorant where Turkiye is concerned. I should be in Istanbul sometime august-sept. and would appreciate some knowledge of it.. like where's the best cheapest place to be in, where to go, what to speak (do they speak english or french or neither)... what are they like..etc

Would appreciate some facts and advice, as I will be going there as a student.

    Thank you in advance

Hi Im new to this site but I have been to turkey and the place is fabulous, people are as firendly as can be and there is allot to see, if I have any advice it would be to grab yourself a lonely planet, learn the basics of the language because it's a whole lot more fun even when your just making an attempt at the language. Dont put to much effort into finding accomadation because its real easy to get around once your their, and if nothing else then head around the west coast and check out the amazing scenery. Goreme in capadocia is also a great place to check out!

Im Jelous as hell Turkey is one of my favourite places on earth
How long are you going for, 3 - 4 weeks is a good amount of time to have a real good look around.

    Hi,

I've been living in southern Turkey since last summer. If anyone wants any info, let me know. If I don't have the info-I can find people who do. As stated above, Istanbul, Cappadocia and the western coast are the big hits.

If you're planning on visiting, only spend 2-3 days in Istanbul, and then travel south to Izmir, Bodrum, or Marmaris. Cappadocia is awesome if you have the time to get there. There is too much info to impart my fellow travellers, so please just contact me if you have any questions.

hi this is john from Turkey
    ok here we go
we speak turkish here but you can find a lot of ppl who also can speak english,
german, italian ,greek and french but mostly english
i think Turkey can not be considered as middle eastern
cuz as you know west border of the country is belong to europe and the east to asia,
eastsouth close to middle east and the westnorth to russia
so there are a lot of different kind of ppl in the country
currency is a bit complicated i'll tell ya later :P
if you would like to get more info about Turkey and Istanbul

I have been to Fethiye, I travelled to Turkey from Rhodes Island and that was one of my first destinations, from there you can go to Turtle Beach, Visit the Tombs, Mud Baths, canyon and take a ten Islands Boat cruise it's a great place, I ended up taking a four day Gullet trip that dropped me off down the coast where I made my way to Olympos then inland to Capadocia. From there I headed back to Istanbul then Gallipoli then back down too Ephesus and then I flew to Egypt from Istanbul. All in 3 weeks!

There were a couple other stops I didnt mention but 3 weeks will get you a long way, you can take night busses through allot of it which saves time and money, and its a great way to see as much as you can.

That was pretty much the tourist route and you meet loads of people along the way who are doing exactly the same thing, we wound up travelling with about 12 other people.

In Istanbul you should go to the citypart of Sulthanamet. In this part you can find the blue and Ayasofia mosque. There is good budget accomodation and good restaurants. From there you can explore the rest of the city and going to the Asian part of Istanbul (at the other side of the Bosporus).

Turkish people are good and friendly and most people speak a word of English. You pay with Turkish lira. When I was there US$1,- was 1.600.000 lira. They have skipped all the zeros some weeks ago (not sure!!), so one dollar is now 1,6 Turkish lira. Public transport is good and cheap, the taxis use their meters. Its not much hassle to travel trough Turkey
