Summer 2008. Travel costs   (5 posts)

I planning to go to europe this summer. I've been trying to get an idea of how much it will cost me a day on average. I've read everything from $35-$85 a day. I'm going to be there for 3 months (mid may to mid august) I've already bought plan tickets, and an unlimited 3 month eurorail pass. I'm planning on spending half the time in Spain, and Italy. The rest will be spent breifly traveling through Portugal, France, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, and Hungry. What I'm hoping is that $50 a day will be enough for room board, atractions, and misc travel not covered by the pass. I'm planning on staying in hostels, and eating out once or twice a week. The rest of my food will come from a grocery store. So with the current exchange rate in mind ($1 = .8euro) will $50 (or 40 euro) be enough per day?

    Hi,
I also think 40euro's a day should be enough. A hostel costs about 14euro's a night (you can book some great hostels on this site), and food from a grocery store, especially in the east, is quit cheap. Hope you have a nice trip!

I'm learning some things from the travelogue at www.onesummerineurope.com. This guy spent several months traveling Europe in '02 and has some good info and stories. He has a new blog out now if you want to ask a question - he will respond. He is helping me with my trip.

Good luck all. See you in Europe this summer...

Depending on your lifestyle, yes. Spain, Portugal, Hungary and to an extent Italy are cheper than the Northern European countries anyway, so if you spend a large chunk of your time their, you should be OK - it's at least possible. A bit of clever planning will certainly help as well - For example, many places have museusm/attractions which are free/half price on certain days of the week (in Madrid for example, museums/galleries are free on Sundays) so you can save some money that way.

Thanks for the responces. Glad to know I'll have enough. I'll be in spain for the last couple of weeks in may, and the first week or so in June.
