London - Greece   (7 posts)

Does anyone know the CHEAPEST way to get from London to Greece. I am leaving at the end of July to arrive at the beginning of August, and departing at the beginning of September. I've been quoted $500 as being the cheapest but that seems ridiculous to me!!! Maybe it's because I'm a cheap student, used to being able to travel across the wide open spaces of Canada for under $200...but anyway, there HAS to be something better out there! please help!

    Hi,
Flights are good, but don't count out train tickets...it is about a 23 hour trip from amsterdamn to the north western coast of italy, then about 8 hours to one of the ports on the south eastern coast of italy. Then about an 8 hour ferry to get to the Mainland Greece. This will be good if you intend on stopping in some places along the way....not if you are trying to get there fast though:)

Another cheap airline out of London is Rhine air.....very much the same idea as Easy Jet

You have to cross the South of Italy from Napoli, realistically to one of Ancona (longest ferry, but more services), Bari or Brindisi for the ferry.

Patras is the main port in Greece for Italian arrivals, so look at: www.patrasferry.co.uk/ ((most services in summer offer a "deck" price, which is the cheapest if you can sleep outside))

Can't help with bus/coach travel in Southern Italy, unfortunately, but for trains:

Napoli - Ancona is about 2 hourly, change in Rome, taking 5-7 hours (although that's using more expensive express trains). Ancona is also heading Northerly
Napoli - Bari/Brindisi not so frequent, but 2 hourly again in afternoon. Brindisi is a continuation from Bari and journey takes about 3.45 (to Bari) and 5-5.5 to Brindisi, both changing in Caserta (again, some on express trains)

Italian trains are relatively cheap, and if your prepared to go around the houses a bit, i can suggest some much longer but cheaper journeys avoiding express services if that's of use. Against that, depending upon when you land, it may mean you wouldn't make the ferry the same day, so would have to sleep in a hedge (cheapest) or a hostel etc somewhere, which may make the jny proce overall more expensive.

My gut reaction still says that Ryanair to Ancona and onwards ferry to Patras would be the easiest, and if you get a good Ryanair price, may work out amongst the cheapest as well.

HTH. If you want any further ideas/options etc, just ask. Good luck

    Hi,
Try Easyjet. Did a search for London Gatwick or Luton - Athens, return, 204 £. Going out on July 30th, going back September 6th.

Or try Germanwings, London-Köln-Athens. Air Berlin, London Stansted to Berlin Tegel, Ostend-Brügge, Germany North, Germany West, Hanover, Nürenberg, Düsseldorf or Zürich from there to Athens. Or a mix of Air Berlin and Germania changing flights at Düsseldorf, Zürich or Berlin Tegel .

All of them budget airlines, but you'll have to change flights. All prices do go up for flights to Athens during the Olympics, that's quite obvious when checking prices. It's dead cheap flying London Stansted-Köln, but very expensive flying Köln-Athens ;)

Just a few ideas, try them out, but I guess you'll have to decide very soon to still get reasonable tickets.

    best regards

For anyone interested, there is a special at Ryanair.com for London to Brindisi, Italy (one of the main ferry ports to Greece) for 15.99pounds (before taxes) I think that's also one way...anyway it would add up to less than $150 I think for two-way, and it's VERY close to Athens! It would be a very cheap way to get to the Olympics.
