Cairns to Darwin in 2 weeks?   (2 posts)

    Hi,

I'm visiting australia in May, and joining 2 friends on their travels. I can only go for 2 weeks so I'm trying to find the best way to spend my time. I've already done the whole east coast, so we're thinking of going from Cairns to Darwin, in a campervan, over 14 days. Is this possible? I don't really want to be driving every day. Also, I'm not sure if its complete outback territory and we won't see much life for 2 weeks?

Any advice or other suggestions greatly appreciated!

Cairns to Darwin is travelling across very remote country (outback). May is dry season in tropics so weather will be good, however the only real reliable & safe bitumen for this trip would be Cairns down to Townsville and then across through Mount Isa onto Tennant Creek and up to Darwin. This is a long trip and would take a solid 4 days of safe driving. There is a lot of open outback between the towns on this route. If you have seen the East Coast already, why not consider fly or bus to Darwin and hire a campervan to explore the beautiful areas & sites all around Darwin. eg. Kakadu. 1.5-2.0 weeks in the Top End would be a terrific holiday.
