Train to Jasper   (2 posts)

We want to go by train from Vancouver to Jasper next July. I'm not sure whether it's worth paying extra to go on the Rocky Mountaineer or whether we should just go by VIA rail. The VIA rail departs on a more convenient day but is the Rocky Mountaineer more comfortable/better views etc ? We would only go standard class on either of them but I was a bit worried that there doesn't seem to be anywhere to go to get a good panoramic view from the Rocky Mountaineer if we went on the Red Leaf Service.
    Thanks

We travelled the opposite journey from Jasper to Vancouver in October 2007 via Rocky Mountaineer Red Leaf service, which we found to be excellent in every respect. Whilst there is not the advantage of observation cars in Red Leaf, the picture windows offer excellent views of the scenery which is spectacular to say the least. There is also an open aspect from the rear of the train, which allows panoramic views of what you have just passed, albeit a little noisy from the train itself. We thoroughly enjoyed the total experience, and would recommend the Rocky Mountaineer route to anyone. We were certainly not aware of "missing out" by not using the expensive Gold Leaf service.
Having said that, we have not experienced the VIA route, and therefore cannot comment on that service. The Rocky Mountaineer journey is an experience not to be missed, and you will find the couriers very helpful in pointing out the various sights as you pass them. We have no doubt that you will not regret taking this trip.
