Driving in winter (February) from Vancouver to the Rockies   (2 posts)

Has anyone done this drive in the winter? Is it possible? I understand that highway 1 through Rogers Pass is subject to periodic winter closeings. Does anyone kmow how often this happens and how long the road is typically closed for. Is there an alternative route? Many thanks for any replies! (from a Canadian living in the UK.)

I've driven over Rogers Pass in winter 3 times - once just after Christmas and twice in February. No problems. I've also done the Icefields Parkway from Jasper to Lake Louise in winter twice. Beautiful but got a little tricky towards the southern end the second time due to the amount of snow. I believe that when they close Rogers Pass due to avalanche danger, it's re-opened quickly as they use devices to trigger the avalanche before too much snow accumulates. An alternative route from Kamloops to Jasper and onwards is also a great drive - it was snowing hard for part of the way when I did it but overall the conditions weren't too bad. The southern route over Crowsnest Pass isn't as spectacular as either of the others though.
