I'd like to take a couple weeks in Panama this winter. No set ittinerary. Not much interested in the (modern) Panama City, but would like to check out Casco Viejo, then on to El Valle and up towards David. Looking for route suggestions. Since the plane arrives in PTY late in the evening should I find a hotel there and set out in the a.m. or hop another flight right away to David, rent a car then drive back S.E.? Lodging reccomendations. Funky but comfortable is fine.

if i were you i would get a hotel that night. even if you aren't much of a city person casco viejo is well worth wandering around, both day and night. also, busses from panama city to david are really frequent so it would be easy enough to get one the next day whenever you want. don't know about flights though ... if i were you i would go to boquete out of david. it is gorgeous - just like trekking through a costa rican rainforest minus the hordes of tourists and tourist prices ... again, busses are easy to catch and frequent from david to boquete.
