Belize question   (2 posts)

    Hello,
I'm starting my RTW landing at the Belize City airport at 3:30 p.m. (on xmas eve). I would prefer to go straight to Caye Caulker, but I think I've read the last boat leaves at 5 p.m. , so that's probably cutting it close.

Is there a way to get to Caulker arriving that time of day? Or is it worth it to stay in Belize City for the night?

If Belize City, does anyone have a good hotel reco? I don't mind spending $50 or more if it's a decent place. I figure I would reserve my first night ahead of time, but the hotels that show up on hotels.com searches are all the most expensive places.

    Thanks for any advice.

If you are packing your stuff carry on, you have a good chance of getting there. It sure ain't an hour and a half to get there. I think you probably have about half an hour getting through the airport line and getting the easy going Belizeans to get your bag out promptly You may have to stay in the city if things are slow at the airport. But that place is like some backwater, so it is usually pretty fast. Now, that city is messed up, but it is also interesting. I think there is a place out by the airport, though I have never stayed there. The cab drivers are friendly, so they can suss that out for you if you want.

The hostels ALL bite. I have told the story about how I once slept in a broom closet. Belize City was the place where I did that.

The good news is: There are tons of good seafood joints to hit.

    Good luck.
