Going to be in Costa Rica the end of Feb. some questions....   (2 posts)

I'm going to be flying into San Jose Feb. 8th... going to stay in San Jose for 3 days then meeting a friend and heading out to the sights. A few questions.... I've heard that San Jose is one of the least apealing cities in all of Central and South America.. I've also heard that in recent years the issue of safety has been raised... any opinions on either of these topics would be great.

Here's where the questions begin.... first.. I was told that it's best to rent a 4X4 for the journey.... also to get it with a $0 deductible and full insurance... this brings the cost of the car up quite a bit... I wanted to know if this is legit info... also anyone know of a rental place that is good and cheap..??? I know... I know... asking too much I think...

Next... The east coast... many people think it's too run down... too rainy... too infested with drugs and the like.... but for some reason the climate/flora/fauna change makes me currious. Anyone been to the east coast during this time of year...??? Any thoughts..??

Next.. Crossing borders... what's the best way to get to Nicaragua for a few days.... I have some friends in Granada that I'd like to see... but I don't think that the rental companies like it if you take their vehicle "cross' da' border".... Bus might be a hassle due to the fact that I'm pressed for time.... thoughts.. .thoughts...

Next... the west coast... I was thinking of checking out the northwestern beaches... playa del coco etc.. etc.. any suggestions..

    Thanks in advance...

My favorite part of Costa Rica is the southern part, the Osa Peninsula. Great area and not a lot of tourists. Rent a 4wd and travel down the highway to Puerto Jimenez and then travel on out to Carate for some awesome black sand beaches, turquoise surf, primary jungle, and great little lodges.

BTW: we always take the best insurance package on our rental cars. Be SURE everything is in working order before driving off.
