Can anyone tel me their experiences of travelling through new zealand. I am seriously considering buying a car at christ chursc, travelling in the south & north island then selling it before i leave. Any problems with this? Im just thinking it may work out cheaper than public transport. Will it? And i figure we can see more far out of the way places that public transport systems can't take you.

Please let me know of your opinions & experiences of how youtravelled trhoughout NZ so that i can choose the best option...what would be cheapest??

    Thanx for all your help

Car hire is cheap in Oz and NZ, and I reckon there's a threshold of about 3 months, where it becomes pointless renting and worth buying.
So if you're going to be there that long then try to buy, otherwise don't.
There could be hassle with registration if you don't have an address in NZ. I don't know how you get round this, though there is surely a way. Could be more hassle than it's worth for a couple of months.

Anyway, the best way to see NZ is by motorhome - you have to move around regularly anyway, and this saves the time looking for accommodation in each place. Not cheap though, so best to share with friends.
