New to travelling - cost&packing questions   (2 posts)

My friend and I are going travelling in Jan 06. We've only just begun the planning process so we aren't sure about what order we're doing things, but the aim is to go to Thailand, Vietnam (and possibly some more Asian countries), Australia, New Zealand, and maybe a short stop in Fiji. We want to work wherever possible. I have a fair few questions...

The aim is to stay away a year - can anyone recommend a minimum amount this itinery would require?

Would a round-the-world ticket be best budget-wise, or individual flights?

What would be the budget allowance per day for the various countries? and how far would working supplement this?

We're planning to do a fair bit of diving as we go, and also work, as I said. How would bringing your own dive gear affect things? are there places you can safely leave stuff if you go trekking for a while?

Sorry - bit of an overload!

I travelled in Sabah & Sarawak (Malaysian Borneo) for (only) 3 weeks last July with a friend. I think our land expenses were about AUD600 (UKP 250??) a week each. We stayed mostly in hotels/resorts some good, some less so. Some 4 & 5 start hotels were had for about AUD100 per night Eg Crowne Plaza, Kuching. Of course staying in hostels would be a lot cheaper but SE Asian countries still are a great place for a bit of luxury on the cheap. Maybe you could plan the occasional splurge.

Malaysia is more expensive than Vietnam or Thailand, although the Thai resort areas can be more expensive. (So I have been told, not from experience).

Best to book hotel rooms at the airport or using a local agency and know what prices are and how to haggle (a little anyway). There are always 2 sets of prices and whilst westerners cannot expect to pay real local prices, we should not have to pay totally exorbitant foreigner prices.

Australia & NZ are quite different of course. Although many areas have a well developed backpacker accommodation and tours etc. I am not up to date with costs though. Maybe AUD15 to 20 per night for a bunk in a dorm.
Whenever I plan to go somewhere new I buy/borrow the latest Lonely Planet guide to get an idea of prices etc. I think the Rough Guides are probably as good.

My guess on Airfares would be a round the world ticked with stops in key areas, like Singapore or KL and then use the cheap Asian carriers to jump around SE Asia. Similarly in Australia. Get to Sydney and then look for the cheap offers from Jet Star & Virgin Blue in the papers or on the net.
