'Blagging — a modern English term from the French word blaguer, meaning to joke or to talk through one’s hat — and the way it works is simple. You find a holiday or a hotel room that you fancy, then you try one of several tactics to lower the price or get a few extras thrown in free. You may get lucky, you may not, but what’s the worst that can happen? They can only say no, right? '

The author describes several techniques which saved him thousands - have you ever tried any tricks to lower the price of your holiday?

Very good reading. It is a tactic I often adopt if I have flexibility; for my annual January long weekend I always book the hotel just a couple of days before I go, and generally get a good rate. When I travel in the summer, more often than not without a hotel reservation, I am usually too tired or in a place too quiet to haggle.
