airplanes and security   (2 posts)

I’ve posted this as a reply to some others reviews, but here it goes as a new topic in this forum as well.
Here are just some thoughts about the latest airplane security crisis.
Lately I have read and heard a lot of things about airplane security. Is it just me or is there anybody else that thinks and worries about security in other places? I mean, it seems that we must get worried if a terrorist blow a plane, but nobody seems to worry and understand that very easily a terrorist can blow a train, a museum, a rock concert, metro, buildings, or can easily poison the water we drink, etc, etc, etc…
So what do we do to stop those possibilities? Forbid face cream in the metro? Bottles of water in a museum?
What if you travel by train? What do you do to your luggage? We shall must begin travelling with no luggage at all?
In addition, is it possible that no one realises that to crash a plane you don’t need to be on board? Unfortunately in this crazy world there are lots of people who can easily buy a missile and fire it at a plane over a city or an airport?!
Is it possible that no one realises that crashing a plane is a simple as… open the emergency door during the flight?! Anybody can do that! And you don’t need to carry luggage to do it.
Where is the security to avoid these things from happening?
Don’t be fooled. Unfortunately, in today’s world if some terrorist wants to kill people he can find dozens of easy ways to do so. See the London metro/bus bombings? The Madrid train bombings? Easy and simple. Anyone can do it, anytime.
So should we say “it’s ok to do all the things that we are told to improve airplane security because I don’t want to die”. And then fly to some place, arrive alive and happy, catch the metro to go to diner… and die there?! I mean, is the only problem dying in a plane? Is there no problem about dying some place else?
Of course I don’t mean that we shouldn’t do anything and I understand that crashing a plane is in the media aspect something that appeals to terrorists and because of that fact it is one of the most vulnerable targets.
But I think that if we are able to simply do something so technologic advanced as to put an airplane with 500 people flying at 11 km high in the sky, we certainly can do much more in airport security and getting to screen people and their luggage more efficiently. Why don’t just improve the security system also by making it done by a special trained police force, instead of airport or airliners employees?
But maybe the governments prefer to spend the money with things like missions to Mars…

Just to finish one or two things about the airplane security. Why do we have to arrive at something so tragic and horrendous as September 11 to think that maybe (!!!) we should have the doors to the cockpit planes shut!!! And if we have policemen in the streets why don’t we have them on a plane??? I mean, no one thinks about the first, logic and easy things in the first place?!
About the hand luggage – why don’t just continue to screen it at the airport security (with more efficient technology), allow to carry them on the cabin, simply put it in the compartments… and have someone (an air marshal?) to lock them from the beginning to the end of the flight?
    What are your thoughts?

dont think so -- certain that some controls have to be activated on the flight deck before a door can open in flight- the windows are designed to fit at an angle so the pressure in the plane pushes the window into the frame to help make and keep the seal tight
<<<we certainly can do much more in airport security and getting to screen people and their luggage more efficiently. Why don’t just improve the security system also by making it done by a special trained police force, instead of airport or airliners employees? >>
absolutly true--the problem is nobody wants to pay for it -- the airlines would just add that cost into the tix and then nobody could afford to fly-- a totally unsatisifactory response but true

just a waste of effort --why not just check the luggage to begin with--also air marshals do not accompany every flight because there isnt enough money in the budget to pay for them
everything you say about terrorism and personal safety is true- the only option you have is to stay at home -- but lots of accidents happen in the home
i think the best you can do is be aware of your surroundings and take as many normal precautions as one possibly can- but no body can guarantee complete safety
