Several years ago I was nearly caught out at BKK airport on this. At the time I had some diving eqpt with me in a seperate bag. I left from LHR no prob, flew internally in Thailand no prob yet when I went to check in at BKK for the return leg to LHR they tried to charge me. Anyway, I managed to argue my way out of it as it was sports eqpt, but the check in supervisor told me then that they are entitled to charge 1% of a standard one way 1st class ticket, for every kilo that you're over regardless even if flying economy. So yes, it was steep & a good job I didn't have to pay the £230 extra.............
