We recently had a very bad experience with Spanair baggage tracing staff at Palma de Mallorca Airport. On 27 July 2006 we traveled from Zurich to Palma for a short four-day stay there. When we arrived both our bags were missing. After a long wait a Property Irregularity Report was issued. Towards the evening of our second day in Palma the airline told us that the bags had arrived. When we got to the airport at 10 p.m. to collect the bags, only one was available. We repeatedly called Spanair to enquire about the missing bag but their reponse was uniformly discourteous and unsympathetic. On the day of our return flight to Zurich we again contacted the Spanair baggage tracing office at Palma de Mallorca Airport and after much pressure from our part we were allowed to enter an enclosed baggage hold area where mishandled baggage is stored. In less than one minute we had located our missing bag. To our surprise the baggage tag on the bag showed that the bag had been forwarded from Zurich to Palma by Swiss on the day of our arrival in Palma; the bag had arrived only a couple of hours after our arrival there. But Spanair does not seem to have a procedure in place to match such mishandled baggage and return it to their owners expeditiously. The Spanair staff showed a total lack of customer orientation.
All in all, a very negative experience and we shall definitely stay clear of Spanair in any future air travel.
