Really considering a cruise through the Amazon and venturing on to Galapagos Islands. Anyone done this trip? When is the best time of year to do this? Any recommendations for tour operators?

Galapagos is amazing - our family of four were on the Eclipse -a 48 passenger ship - that is the one Abercrombie and Kent uses for their trips but we booked directly and saved over $1000 per person. It was truly a memorable trip - we also went to macchu Picchu and the Amazon in the same trip - loved Macchu Picchu - Amazon where we were was just Ok - not much wildlife and stifling hot in summer. Lots of birds though if you are a birder.

Just got back from doing Maccu Pichu and the Galapgos. Although December is considered their wet season we really only had one all day rain when we visited Maccu Pichu. Booked through Overseas Adventure Travel. I was not impressed with them as a tour operator. We spent a grand total of 26 hours at Macchu Pichu out of a total of nine days in Peru.
The Galapagos were great. Had four day on a boat going from island to island. Then spent two nights on Santa Cruz Island. The only problem here was our final itinerary showed we were to stay at a resort called the Royal Palm. OAT actually booked us at a low class hotel in town. The location was better but the hotel was not very good. Stay away from the Hotel Silberstein.
Several of the hotels in town were advertising day and multiple day boat tours.
