Diving October - Canary Islands?   (3 posts)

I have about 10 days off in October and am looking to book a holiday with the specific aim of getting more diving experience. I am thinking about going to Fuerteventura in The Canary Islands.
I have been researching this on the net and am confused about whether I need a doctors medical note prior or whether I just need to self-certify.One diving school website said that a doctors medical note is required by Spanish law but I haven't seen this on any other diving schools websites. Has anyone any knowledge of this?
Is October an ok time to go diving here or should we consider somewhere else. We will be flying out of the UK and want to go somewhere reasonably warm but mainly have good sea conditions as we would be disappointed to arrive and have it too choppy to dive. Any alternative ideas for us to mull over are most welcome!
    Thanks

I worked on Lanzarote for 2 years, as a diving instructor. There it is obligatory for every diver to have a medical statement from a doctor saying that you are fir to dive with scuba.
The diving there is really nice, I enjoyed it very much, but I'm not sure how it is on Fuertaventura. I've heard it's quite different on all of the Canary Islands.
I have a dive center in Huatulco, Mexico, and obviously I would have to suggest this as an alternative. This summer we actually have a direct charter flight coming in from.... Manchester! Operated by First Choice and they offer it until the end of October. You can get a flight only for under 300 quid....
Huatulco is a very relaxed and tranquille resort if you're looking for an alternative to the busy and commercial areas like the Red Sea and Cancun.

    Hello,

the secuity was very tight in hurghada, but not to the extent where every where you turn is a police officer etc.
we flew in to luxor and we had to transfer to hurghada across the desert by bus. this was done by armed convoy with at least 6 buses, in between the buses there was an armed van with 5 officers in it.
in and around hurghada there were police officers and if you needed help they would come straight over.
buses couldn't park right in front of the hotel due to security gates and bollards.
i know this may seem too much but honestly when you are there it doesnt even bother you. i had a fantastic holiday
im going back next year and this time im taking my kids.
