A crowd of dozens of onlookers clapped and gasped as the largest airliner in the world, Singapore Airlines' A380, landed at Sydney Airport this afternoon.

On the oberservation deck at the international terminal, there were shouts of "there it is" and pointing as the plane first came into view at about 5.25pm.

Men, women and children craned their necks to catch a glance as it landed, with all manner of recording devices, video records, mobile phones and cameras, to document the moment.

The plane itself, from a distance, appeared short and fat, as it taxied past the observation deck.

Chris Denton, 27, was there to watch and take photos for his private collection of plane pictures.

"It's not marvellous in itself but it's marvelous what it does, it's very big, apparently very easy to fly and very quiet."

Prior to the plane landed Mr Denton described the plane as impressive, but not as impressive as the Concorde.

"The A380 is more of what we've seen already," he said.

"Whereas the in many ways the Concorde broke all the boundaries and rewrote the rules."

"It brought a lot of technology to aviation that we now take for granted."

After the planes landed crowds jammed against the window to catch another look at the plane.

Peter Mindhan, 54, said watching the plane land was pretty exciting, but again compared it unfavourably to the Concorde.

"It's unbelievable, they have been talking about it for 11 years and it's finally come to fruitition," he said.

"It's my third airplane, I've seen coming in, I watched the Concorde and the Jumbo in the 70s."

He too took photos of the plane to record the moment.

The plane came into the country after a 7 1/2 hour flight from Singapore.

Passengers looked tired but happy as they came out of the arrivals gate at Sydney Airport.

It was a carnival atmosphere with a three-piece band playing music, media crews speaking to passengers everywhere and passengers showing off their framed certificates of flight.

Bo Lamdgrend, 56, of Sweden, said the experience was fantastic "like a big party all the way."

Mr Lamdgrend said he paid $14,000 Singapore dollars for for his economy-class return ticket.

"All the people, everyone joined in together and had a good time," he said.

"Normal flight is totally different. The take-off is much longer but much quieter."

"You wonder if you're ever going to take off."
