I think the safest, surest and most comfortable way to travel is to book your trip through the tour operator, especially if you don’t know the destination. And if you are interested in more upscale tour try Latour Company at www.latour.com . They offer various tours of Central and South America. They will help you with the planning your itinerary and will save you time and money in a long run.

caguide is right when he/she says it helps a lot to have an updated book
but i think help from locals to organize your trip is free.
anyway i understood you wanted to stay in Arg. the 6 weeks.
on a second reading i got you have to allocate time in diff. countries
i can make it short in Arg. if you please.
2 days in northeastern: iguazu
3 days northwestern: salta jujuy
a week in buenos aires
3 days in the lake district
3 days in ushuaia
it is not so bad.

What you really require is a good up to date Guidebook such as The Lonely Planet or Footprint's South American Handbook or others on spefic countries and cities such as Lima/Cuzco, La Paz, Buenos Aires, etc. you wish to visit and also surf the net. Nobody is going to do your travel planning and research for you for free, that is up to you

Your itinerary is exactly what I would recommend. The only thing I would add is Machu Picchu but you have to save something to come back for.

Also, you might want to consider taking the ferry from B.A. to Colonia and going overland to Montevideo. Colonia is very historic, quiet and charming.

If you happen to be in Santiago Sept. 29-October 1, the annual wine festival will be going on at the Hotel Plaza San Francisco -- three nights of tasting by more than 40 Chilean wineries. I happened to be staying there last year during the event and am trying to get a group together so I can take my husband back this year.

Have fun!

Hello travellers,

I would recommend the country of Argentina for your travels. It is very European and cultured, yet has much of the South American love for life. Some sights outside the fun capital of Buenos Aires are also not to be missed.

Hi,

I recently spent a couple of months working in chile but unfortunately had to come back a few weeks ago to have an operation, but i would definitely advise going to this beautiful country if you can. There is so much variety and so much to see. I was staying in the coastal city of vina del mar, and although the weather isn't all that great there this time of year, vina and the neighbouring city of valparaiso are really worth a visit because they are so contrasting. Compared to somewhere like rio there aren't that many sights in the capital, santiago, but the nightlife is brilliant and it's a good base to get to the deserts in the north or the lakes in the south. My sister and i are going back to south america this august to travel for 6 weeks. I really recommend investing in a mercosur airpass as you can travel round loads of places for really great value. We're starting our trip in Rio, then moving on to Iguassu Falls, then on to Buenos Aires (including a short trip to Montevideo which is only 2 hours from BA on the ferry) and then finishing up in Santiago via Mendoza. In all that time we intend to do lots of partying, beaching, adventure sports, horse-riding, wine-tasting and anything else that takes our fancy, so there really is something for everyone in south america! Have lots of fun wherever you choose to go!:)

I really would recommend you Chile! I spend one year in this lovely country and I realy felt in love with it!
Its one of the savest countries down there and travelling is quite cheap. For long distances just take the bus (semi-cama, TUR-BUS its the best!) and you will get to any place you want.
I travelled from Arica (the very north) to Patagonia (Where I stayed for nearly one year as an exchange student). If you travel in the Chilean summer the south of chile is the most beautiful place on earth I have ever seen! (Even it's a littel bit more expensive getting there)
I'm shure you'll love it. If you need any other informations, just contact me!

Try Peru. It is a great country, the center of the only ancient culture in South America: the Incas.

Hi
Can anyone give some useful advice for a first time traveller to South America? My boyfirend and I are planning on going for 6 weeks this July/August and hope to cover a few countries in South America but have never travelled before. Do you think we can manage it with no experience, and without being able to speak Spanish? Can anyone recommend the best places to see, bearing in mind we only have 6 weeks?
Thanks
